Naphtalophos (NAF) is and organophosphate compound, used to control gastrointestinal nematodes in sheep. While NAF is indicated in Australia at 30 mg/kg dose, in Uruguay is currently indicated at 50 mg/kg. The aim of this work was to evaluate the clinical efficacy of NAF administered at different doses against gastrointestinal nematodes in lambs. One hundred and fifty (150) Corriedale lambs naturally infected with gastrointestinal nematodes were involved in the current experiment. The animals were randomly allocated into five groups (n=30 each), an untreated control group and four NAF treated groups: NAF10, NAF30, NAF50 and NAF70, which were orally treated with NAF at 10, 30, 50 and 70 mg/kg dose. Fecal samples were collect a 4, 14 and 28 days post-treatment for clinical efficacy assessment, which was performed by the faecal egg count reduction test (FECRT). The obtained efficacy at day 4 post-treatment was 85% (IC95 74:92) for NAF10, 99% (IC95 99:100) for NAF30, 100% for NAF50 and NAF70. Although similar results were obtained at 14 days after treatment, at day 28 after treatment the FECRT ranged between 49 and 60% in all treated groups. In all groups, a smaller proportion of Haemonchus spp. L3 were quantified compared to that observed in the control group (>95%). No significant differences in FECRT between NAF30, NAF50 and NAF70 were found at all times evaluated. No side effects were observed in the groups treated with the highest doses (50 and 70 mg/kg). This study shows a similar NAF efficacy after 30 to 70 mg/kg dose.
