Helminths cause respiratory and gastrointestinal infections in animals, especially in neonates and young animals. Some species of helminth parasites of domestic animals have zoonotic potential, becoming a public health problem, especially when combined with lack of information about the population of these zoonoses and lack of control over of their hosts. This study aimed to identify and quantify the species of helminths that affect dogs are not domiciled in the region of Cuiab, in the Midwest region of Brazil. A total of 100 animals, from the Center for Zoonosis Control of Cuiab were euthanized and necropsied for helminth serching. In all 8,217 helminths were found in 85 animals identified in six species: Ancylostoma caninum, A. braziliense, Trichuris vulpis, Toxocara canis, Dirofilaria immitis and Dipylidium caninum. The most prevalent species was A. caninum (76%) and also the most abundant (66.38 mean abundance population). Although A. braziliense have shown low prevalence (2%) compared to other hosts previously studied in the region, which shows certain specificity, their mean intensity of parasitism higher compared to other helminths shows its adaptability to parasitism in dogs. The presence of D. immitis is an important finding, since it is a potentially zoonotic agent, however, the finding is considered sporadic.
