The last revision of the chigger mites from Neotropical and Nearctic regions was made during the 80’s. It was recognized 87 genera of chiggers in the West Hemisphere, including Trombewingia Fonseca, 1955. During collections of wild rodents in area of Atlantic Forest from State of São Paulo, Brazil, some specimens of chigger mites were found on Akodon montensis, Delomys dorsalis and Sooretamys angouya. Part of the material was mounted s for morphological studies to the light microscope and digital scanning microscope. The species was identified as T. bakeri. This taxon has 2 known species, ectoparasitic on rodents: T. brasiliensis (Distrito federal, Brazil, in Necromys lasiurus) and T. Bakeri (São Paulo, Brazil, in Guerlinguetus ingrami). Here we present the diagnosis of the species: SIF: 4B-N-3-3111-0000; fPp: B/B/BBB; fCx: 1.1.1; fSt: 2/2; fSc: PL > AL; Ip: 750-835; fD: 2H-6-6-6-4; DS: 32; VS: 20; NDV: 52. The species T. bakeri could also be easily separated from T. brasiliensis by the ununsual morphology of the dorsal idiosomal and PL setae (foliated in T. bakeri). We recovered de types deposited at the Acari Collection of the Instituto Butantan (IBSP) and we are designating a lectotype and paralectotype for T. bakeri. New records of host and localities for this species have been given here, including more details of its morphology.
